Graceismine, Greetings!
I would say that catholics do indeed "have a right to pray as they wish."
However, they have NO rights that their prayer will be heard or answered.
One MUST pray to the source (God,alone) not non- seeing, non- hearing images.
In fact Jesus Himself stated that he is the ONLY way to the Father.
That catholics use Mary to get to the Father, automatically excludes them from God hearing and answering their prayers.
