Default Ancient-Future Spirituality

Quote:
"In the emerging culture, darkness represents spirituality. We see this in Buddhist temples, as well as Catholic and Orthodox churches. Darkness communicates that something serious is happening."[1]--Dan Kimball, author of The Emerging Church (foreword by Rick Warren)

more likely Darkness is the result of something serious has already taken place. like the rejection of God, his word and sin.

three instance of the word Darkened from Romans to Philemon

Ro 1:21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified [him] not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Ro 11:10 Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back alway.
Eph 4:18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:

look at all 10 of the 11 verses using the word darkness found from Romans to Philemon.

Ro 2:19 And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness,
Ro 13:12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.
1Co 4:5 Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.
2Co 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
Eph 5:8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now [are ye] light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
Eph 5:11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove [them].
Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high [places].
Col 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated [us] into the kingdom of his dear Son:
1Th 5:4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.
1Th 5:5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

darkness is not about God doing something serious but that a result of a serious action has been judged and places men in a darkened states or in darkness. darkness is a result of sin, rejection of God and his word.

of course we are limited in our understanding of Dan Kimball's one sentence quote. it would be nice if we could see the full context. but I have noticed that there are many churches adopting night services that look more like rock concerts and loose preaching than a normal Sunday service. With the stage darkened, soft to hard rock entertainment instead of some casual and hymnal songs and music. I saw one young preacher preaching in a tee shirt that represented the anti-christ on it.
